Slander or a Bunco Game?Everything appears to be going well, with the witness giving her deposition, and art experts authenticating the painting. But then the witness takes a run-out powder, the art critic ends up dead, and Mason is faced with defending a client against a mountain of evidence.

Review1.1

An solid intermediate look at the life and art of PicassoThis book balances Picasso's life with his art, organized chronologically by the key stages of his career: Paris, The Blue Period, The Rose Period, Cubism, Synthetic Cubism, etc. Some of the key paintings studied are "The Absinthe Drinker," "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," "Minotaur and Dead Mare Outside a Cave," and "Guernica." Mason not only highlights key aspects of these paintings (and other art forms as well), he fills his book with fascinating details, like the German officer who saw "Guernica" in Picasso's studio and asked "Did you do this?" only to be told by the artist, "No, you did this." These are the sorts of things that are well worth being remembered by students. There are certainly more detailed books about Picasso's life and art, but this is an excellent intermediary book. Other titles in the Famous Artists series look at Cezanne, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Monet and Van Gogh.

A story about differences between expectations and reality

Best in the series, maybe one of the best poker books ever. The essays are taken from Malmuth's writings in Poker Digest and other magazines over the past few years, as with the first two volumes. I thought the first volume was excellent, and the second was very good. This is by far the best.
Poker Essays III, in my opinion, now joins "The Theory of Poker", "Super System", and the "for Advanced Players" series on the list of the most important poker books.
As usual, Malmuth succeeds admirably in forcing the reader to think about many aspects of their game most players are usually unaware of. He discusses, for example, specific flaws in many average players who overrate their own abilities. And the last two sections are wonderful additions to this volume: "Hands to Talk About", and then quizzes. The "Hands" section discusses specific hands/situations in depth, to try to bring together all poker ideas into making a decision. The quizzes section includes two of his own, one hold'em and one stud, and one previously published by Bob Ciaffone (whose book "Improve Your Poker" is also on my short list of great poker books). There are 50+ essays in the book, and I found all of them interesting, thought-provoking and relevant. One of the things I like best about Malmuth is that he finds topics to write about that are completely ignored or forgotten by most players but that are either directly or indirectly relevant to winning play.
As with Poker Essays I and II, I'm sure I'll be rereading this book several times over the years.

If you want Mason Bees you need this bookI've read quite a few books on mason bees and have tried over the years various techniques, styles of bee blocks, etc., all with limited success. It seems as though by year three you end up with no mason bees no matter how hard you try or what kind of blocks you keep.
Margarite is a scientist and has seemed to figure out the right way to keep mason bees and has developed a new re-usable form of bee blocks that really works. You can buy these blocks from her, or with the included instructions, build them yourself if so inclined. I highly recommend her book and her approach to anyone interested in mason bees.
